About First Niagara Bank, National Association

First Niagara Bank, National Association was a regional bank based in Buffalo, New York. Founded in 1870 as Farmers and Mechanics’ Savings Bank, the bank later changed its name to Lockport Savings Bank. In 1998, the bank became First Niagara Financial Group and was publicly traded on the NASDAQ. Over the years, the company grew through mergers and acquisitions. In 2007, First Niagara acquired Great Lakes Bancorp, Inc. in a deal worth $1 billion, which increased its presence in Western New York and Pennsylvania. In 2009, it acquired Harleysville National Corporation, expanding its footprint in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. First Niagara continued to make acquisitions, including NewAlliance Bancshares, Inc. in 2010 and HSBC Bank USA’s retail network in Upstate New York in 2012. At its peak, First Niagara had over 400 branches across six states in the Northeast and approximately $40 billion in assets. However, the company struggled with integration challenges and a deteriorating financial performance. In 2015, the bank was acquired by KeyBank for $4.1 billion. Today, First Niagara Bank is no longer in operation and its assets are now under the ownership of KeyBank.
