About District of Columbia
The District of Columbia, commonly referred to as Washington, D.C., is a federal district and the capital city of the United States of America. Established on July 16, 1790, under the terms of the United States Constitution, it serves as the seat of the federal government and houses various national institutions. Covering an area of approximately 68 square miles (177 square kilometers), the District of Columbia is located along the Potomac River, bordering the states of Maryland and Virginia. It is divided into four quadrants: Northwest, Northeast, Southwest, and Southeast, with the Capitol Building serving as the geographic center. As the political hub of the nation, the District of Columbia is home to the three branches of the federal government: the Congress, Supreme Court, and the executive branch, headed by the President. It also hosts countless federal agencies, international embassies, and headquarters of major non-profit organizations. In addition to its governmental significance, Washington, D.C., is known for its rich history, iconic landmarks, and cultural institutions. These include the White House, National Mall, Lincoln Memorial, Smithsonian Institution, and numerous museums, galleries, and theaters that attract millions of visitors annually. The District of Columbia operates under a mayor-council system of government, with the Mayor serving as the chief executive, and the Council of the District of Columbia acting as the legislative body. The district is not part of any state and has a non-voting representative in the U.S. House of Representatives and no voting senators in the U.S. Senate.
