About Delaware River Basin Commission

The Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC) is a federal interstate regulatory agency established in 1961 to manage and protect the resources of the Delaware River Basin. The DRBC is responsible for issuing water allocation permits, managing water quality, and enforcing environmental regulations for the basin which includes parts of many states including New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. The commission is composed of five voting members, the governors of the four basin states and the commander of the US Army Corps of Engineers’ North Atlantic Division, as well as a non-voting federal government representative. The commission’s work is supported by a team of experts in water resources, hydrology, environmental science, and law. The DRBC’s mission is to assure the equitable allocation of the basin’s water resources, safeguard public health and safety, protect and enhance water quality and aquatic habitats, and manage and protect fish and wildlife resources. They achieve their objectives by developing and implementing comprehensive plans, policies, and regulations, and by facilitating coordination among all partners operating in the basin. Today, the DRBC is widely recognized as a model of effective interstate cooperation and an instrumental body in protecting and managing the shared resources of the Delaware River Basin.
