The DeKalb County School District (DCSD) is a public school system serving the cities of Dunwoody, Stonecrest, Brookhaven, Doraville, and Tucker, as well as parts of unincorporated DeKalb County, in the US state of Georgia. Established in 1873, the DCSD covers an area of approximately 130 square miles and is the third-largest school district in the state. It serves nearly 102,000 students, from pre-kindergarten to twelfth grade, across 139 schools and centers, and employs more than 14,000 educators and staff. DCSD operates under the guidance of a superintendent and a seven-member board of education. Its mission is to provide students with a rigorous and relevant learning experience that prepares them to succeed in college, career, and life. The district also offers numerous extracurricular programs, including clubs, sports, and arts, to support students’ interests and promote their holistic development. Despite some challenges in the past, including accreditation issues, DCSD has made significant strides in recent years under the leadership of Superintendent Cheryl Watson-Harris. It has improved graduation rates, reduced disciplinary incidents, and earned national recognition for its innovative programs and initiatives. As of 2021, the district continues to prioritize equity, diversity, and inclusion, with a focus on closing achievement gaps and providing equitable opportunities for all students.
