About Civil Air Patrol
The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is a Congressionally-chartered non-profit organization that serves as the official civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force. It was established in 1941, just days before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, with the mission of providing emergency services, including search and rescue, disaster relief, and homeland security operations. CAP members also assist in aerospace education and provide cadet programs for young adults aged 12 to 21. The organization's fleet consists of more than 560 single-engine aircraft and its members conduct around 85% of the search-and-rescue missions in the United States. CAP has over 60,000 volunteers nationwide, including pilots, aircrews, chaplains, and support personnel. The organization's services are extended not only to federal, state, and local agencies but also to private citizens in need. CAP has three main missions: emergency services, which involves disaster relief and search and rescue operations; aerospace education, which includes teaching about aviation history and instructing in STEM subjects; and cadet programs, which trains young adults in aviation, leadership, and character development. The organization has also been instrumental in aiding U.S. military efforts through its numerous air and ground search missions and by providing support services to military personnel and their families. CAP is headquartered in Alabama and has more than 1,500 units located throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
