About Office of Personnel Management
The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) is an independent agency within the United States federal government that manages the civil service of the federal government. OPM was established on January 1, 1979, as a result of the Civil Service Reform Act of 1978. The agency is responsible for recruiting, hiring, and retaining employees; conducting background checks; developing personnel policies and guidance; administering retirement benefits and health insurance for federal employees; and managing the federal government’s performance appraisal system. OPM also works with federal agencies to provide leadership and guidance in human resources management, including overseeing the development of policies and regulations related to employee management. The current director of the OPM is Kiran Ahuja, who was appointed on March 19, 2021, by President Joe Biden. Overall, the Office of Personnel Management plays a critical role in ensuring that the federal government has a competent and well-trained workforce to carry out its mission effectively.
