Alabama State University (ASU) is a public historically black university located in Montgomery, Alabama, United States. The university was founded in 1867 as the Lincoln Normal School of Marion by nine newly freed slaves to provide education for African Americans in the state. In 1887, the school became a state institution and was renamed as the State Normal School and University for Colored Students. Over the years, the university has gone through several name changes, and in 1969, it became known as Alabama State University. The university’s campus spans about 172 acres and includes state-of-the-art facilities, such as a new performing arts center and a recently completed student center. The university is home to several notable alumni, including baseball Hall of Famer, Willie Mays, and current U.S. Senator, Doug Jones. ASU is also a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, competing in 18 NCAA Division I sports.
