Walter Energy (formerly known as Walter Industries) was a publicly traded American coal mining company that operated from 1946 until its bankruptcy in 2016. The company specialized in metallurgical coal production, primarily serving the steel manufacturing industry. Headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, Walter Energy operated mines in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The company's primary operations focused on the mining, processing, and exporting of metallurgical coal, which is essential for steel production. Walter Energy also maintained smaller thermal coal and natural gas operations. At its peak, the company operated several major mining complexes in Alabama's Blue Creek coal seam, as well as facilities in West Virginia and western Canada. In 2011, Walter Energy expanded significantly by acquiring Western Coal Corporation for $3.3 billion, making it one of the world's largest publicly traded pure-play metallurgical coal producers. However, the company faced significant challenges due to declining global coal prices and substantial debt from acquisitions. In July 2015, Walter Energy filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, and in 2016, its core assets were sold to Warrior Met Coal, which continues to operate some of the former Walter Energy mines. The bankruptcy marked the end of Walter Energy as an independent entity after seven decades of operations.
