About United Church of Christ
The United Church of Christ (UCC) is a mainline Protestant denomination in the United States. It was formed in 1957 through the merger of the Evangelical and Reformed Church and the Congregational Christian Churches. The UCC is a covenantal denomination, meaning that individual congregations covenant with one another and the larger church body. The UCC embraces an inclusive understanding of Christianity, affirming the dignity and worth of every person and promoting justice and peace. The UCC is governed by a General Synod, which meets biennially to make decisions regarding church policy and governance. Each congregation is autonomous and has the ability to govern itself democratically. The UCC advocates for social justice issues, including civil rights, environmental justice, and LGBTQ rights. The UCC is also committed to interfaith dialogue and recognizes the validity of other religious traditions. The UCC operates a number of national ministries, including the UCC Justice and Witness Ministries, the UCC Council for Health and Human Service Ministries, and the UCC Global Ministries. The UCC also has relationships with partner churches and organizations around the world. As of 2021, the UCC had over 4,900 congregations and approximately 800,000 members.
