About UN Women

UN Women is the United Nations entity dedicated to promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women worldwide. Established in 2010, it was created to consolidate and further expand United Nations efforts to advance gender equality and women’s rights. As of 2021, UN Women is headed by Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka and operates in more than 90 countries worldwide, with offices located in New York, Geneva, Brussels, and Addis Ababa. Its strategic plan for 2018-2021 focuses on three pillars: increasing women’s leadership and participation, ending violence against women and girls, and enhancing women’s economic empowerment.
