About U.S. Indo-Pacific Command
The U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM) is one of the eleven unified combatant commands of the United States Armed Forces. Established in 1947 as the Pacific Command, it was renamed the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command in 2018 to more accurately reflect its area of responsibility. As the primary unified military command in the Indo-Pacific region, USINDOPACOM is entrusted with ensuring peace, security, and stability across this vast geographical area. Headquartered in Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii, USINDOPACOM works in close coordination with various U.S. government agencies, regional allies, and partner nations to uphold American interests, promote regional security, and strengthen defense cooperation. The command’s area of responsibility encompasses approximately half of the Earth’s surface, stretching from the west coast of the United States to the west coast of India, and from the Arctic to the Antarctic. USINDOPACOM is responsible for conducting joint military operations, exercises, and training to deter aggression, maintain freedom of navigation, respond to humanitarian crises, and build partner capacity. The command is led by a four-star general or admiral, who serves as the senior ranking military officer in the theater. Under the command’s direction, a diverse combination of military forces from all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces collaboratively work to safeguard U.S. national interests and maintain regional stability. USINDOPACOM plays a crucial role in U.S. foreign policy, contributing to the overall security architecture of the Indo-Pacific region. Through its steadfast commitment to preserving peace, stability, and partnerships, the command ensures America’s ability to protect its national interests and foster a free and open Indo-Pacific.
