Founded in 1973, the company operated fitness centers primarily under the New York Sports Clubs, Boston Sports Clubs, Washington Sports Clubs, and Philadelphia Sports Clubs brands. At its peak, TSI managed over 160 fitness facilities across the northeastern United States, serving approximately 600,000 members. The company went public in 2006, trading on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol CLUB. TSI’s business model focused on providing fitness facilities in dense urban markets, typically offering strength and cardio equipment, group fitness classes, personal training services, and other wellness programs. In September 2020, Town Sports International Holdings filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, citing significant financial challenges exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and mandatory gym closures.
