The Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) is an interstate compact established in 1948 to improve public education and educational policy in the southern United States. Headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, it is the nation’s first regional interstate compact for education. The organization serves 16 member states: Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia. SREB works directly with state leaders, educators, and policymakers to research and analyze educational issues, create and share reports, and provide technical assistance to member states. The organization focuses on several key areas including college and career readiness, educator effectiveness, postsecondary education, and school improvement. The organization is governed by a board that includes the governor of each member state and four gubernatorial appointees, including at least one state legislator and one educator. SREB operates various initiatives such as the Academic Common Market, which allows students to pursue out-of-state college degrees at in-state tuition rates, and the Regional Contract Program for health professions. The organization also conducts regular assessments of educational progress in its member states and provides data-driven recommendations for policy improvements.
