Severstal Dearborn was a steel manufacturing facility located in Dearborn, Michigan, formerly owned by Russian steel company PAO Severstal. The facility was originally part of the Ford River Rouge Complex, built in 1920 to support Ford Motor Company’s automotive manufacturing operations. In 2004, Severstal acquired the plant from Rouge Industries for $285.5 million. The facility specialized in producing flat-rolled steel products, primarily serving the automotive industry and other industrial sectors. It had an annual production capacity of approximately 2.5 million tons of steel and employed around 1,400 workers at its peak. The plant featured both basic oxygen furnace and electric arc furnace steelmaking capabilities, along with hot and cold rolling mills. In 2014, AK Steel acquired Severstal Dearborn for $700 million as part of Severstal’s divestment from its North American operations. The acquisition included the integrated steelmaking assets, the cokemaking facility, and other related operations at the Dearborn site. Following the acquisition, the facility became known as AK Steel Dearborn Works. In 2020, Cleveland-Cliffs acquired AK Steel, including the Dearborn facility, which continues to operate as part of Cleveland-Cliffs’ steel manufacturing network.
