About Resource Center for Independent Living

The Resource Center for Independent Living (RCIL) is a nonprofit organization headquartered in Upstate New York, United States. It is dedicated to providing support, advocacy, and services to people with disabilities, including those who are deaf or hard of hearing. Founded in 1980 as a grassroots effort, RCIL’s mission is to ensure that all individuals with disabilities have the resources and opportunities necessary to live independently in their communities. RCIL provides a variety of services including peer counseling, independent living skills training, benefits advisement, housing assistance, transportation, and employment services. They also advocate for policies and legislation that advance the rights of people with disabilities, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Today, RCIL continues to serve individuals with disabilities across 12 counties in New York State. Their philosophy of independent living reflects a self-help, peer-support, and empowerment approach, and they promote the principles of universal access, self-determination, and full participation in community life.
