The Pretrial Services Agency for the District of Columbia (PSA) is a federal agency that serves the District of Columbia’s criminal justice system. Established in 1967, PSA operates as an independent entity within the Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency (CSOSA). The agency’s primary mission is to assess, supervise, and provide services for defendants awaiting trial in the District of Columbia’s local and federal courts. PSA conducts risk assessments for defendants, makes release recommendations to the courts, and supervises defendants released to the community while their cases are pending. The agency employs evidence-based practices to promote pretrial justice and enhance public safety. Key services include drug testing, substance use disorder treatment, mental health assessment and referrals, and electronic monitoring. The agency works closely with the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, and various law enforcement agencies.
