About Novell
Novell was a software and services company founded in 1979 in Provo, Utah. The company initially gained prominence in the 1980s with Novell NetWare, its network operating system that became the de facto standard for PC-based local area networks. NetWare dominated the network operating system market throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, reaching a peak market share of 63% by 1990. In the mid-1990s, Novell acquired WordPerfect Corporation and Unix System Laboratories, though these acquisitions were later divested. The company shifted its focus to network services and identity management software, developing products like Novell Directory Services (later renamed to eDirectory) and GroupWise. As Microsoft Windows NT gained market dominance, Novell's NetWare market share declined significantly. The company embraced Linux in the early 2000s, acquiring SUSE Linux in 2003 and positioning itself as an enterprise Linux provider. Novell also developed significant intellectual property around networking technologies and file systems. In 2011, Novell was acquired by Attachmate Group for $2.2 billion. The company was subsequently merged with Micro Focus International in 2014, ending Novell's existence as an independent entity. Many of Novell's core products continue to be maintained and developed under the Micro Focus brand.
