About North American Electric Reliability

North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) is a not-for-profit international regulatory authority established in 1968 to ensure the reliability and security of the bulk power system in North America. The organization operates under the oversight of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and governmental authorities in Canada. NERC develops and enforces reliability standards, assesses seasonal and long-term reliability, monitors the bulk power system, and educates, trains, and certifies industry personnel. NERC’s jurisdiction includes users, owners, and operators of the bulk power system, which serves more than 334 million people across the United States, Canada, and the northern portion of Baja California, Mexico. The organization is divided into six regional entities that work to implement reliability standards and monitor compliance. The organization plays a crucial role in preventing and responding to major electrical disturbances and cybersecurity threats to the power grid. NERC maintains the Electricity Information Sharing and Analysis Center (E-ISAC), which provides security threat information and analysis to electricity sector stakeholders. Following the Northeast blackout of 2003, the Energy Policy Act of 2005 authorized the creation of an Electric Reliability Organization (ERO), and NERC was subsequently certified by FERC as the ERO for the United States.
