About Necco
Necco, formerly known as the New England Confectionery Company, was one of the oldest continuously operating candy companies in the United States. Founded in 1847 in Boston, Massachusetts, Necco specialized in manufacturing a variety of candy including the iconic Necco Wafers, Sweethearts conversation hearts, and Clark Bars. Over the years, Necco underwent several ownership changes and financial struggles. In 2018, the company filed for bankruptcy and was acquired by Spangler Candy Company, makers of Dum Dums lollipops. Following the acquisition, Spangler continued to produce Necco's classic sweets, but announced that they would not produce Sweethearts conversation hearts for the 2019 Valentine's Day season due to the short turnaround time. However, the company announced their plans to produce the popular candy for the 2020 Valentine's Day season. Unfortunately, Necco's historic candy factory in Revere, Massachusetts, was sold in 2018 and the company stopped production. In March of 2020, Spangler announced that Necco Wafers and Sweethearts would return to store shelves by the summer of 2020, with production being moved to a different facility. Overall, Necco holds a special place in American candy history, and its classic confections have captured the hearts of generations of candy lovers.
