The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is a private, non-profit organization based in Washington D.C. Since its establishment in 1983, the NED has been dedicated to promoting democracy globally by supporting groups and individuals working towards democratic advancement in their countries. The NED provides financial and technical assistance to NGOs, civic groups, and media outlets that promote democracy in countries where it is not yet fully established. These efforts are carried out through a network of four core institutes – the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs, the International Republican Institute, the Center for International Private Enterprise and the Solidarity Center.
