Mervyns was an American middle-scale department store chain based in Hayward, California. Founded by Mervin G. Morris in 1949 in San Lorenzo, California, the company grew to become a major retail presence in the western and southwestern United States. At its peak, Mervyns operated more than 300 stores across 16 states. The retailer specialized in selling clothing, footwear, accessories, and home goods, targeting middle-income families. Mervyns was known for its competitive pricing and frequent sales promotions, including its popular “Early Bird” sales events. In 1978, Dayton Hudson Corporation (now Target Corporation) acquired Mervyns, helping fuel its expansion throughout the 1980s and 1990s. In 2004, Target Corporation sold Mervyns to a group of investors including Sun Capital Partners, Cerberus Capital Management, and Lubert-Adler for $1.2 billion. However, the company struggled to compete with other retailers and was significantly impacted by the 2008 economic recession. On July 29, 2008, Mervyns filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and subsequently announced the liquidation of all its stores. By December 31, 2008, all Mervyns locations were closed, ending the company’s 59-year retail history.
