About Investment Corporation of America

Investment Corporation of America (ICA) was a real estate investment trust (REIT) that operated in the United States from the 1960s to the late 1980s. It was founded in 1960 by William J. Levitt, who was also the founder of the Levitt & Sons homebuilding company. ICA’s mission was to invest in and manage income-producing properties and provide steady dividends to its investors. ICA focused primarily on commercial, retail, and multifamily residential properties, and at its peak, owned over 100 properties across the country. It also had holdings in other industries, such as hotels, oil and gas, and timber. The company became publicly traded in 1967 and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. However, in the late 1980s, ICA experienced financial difficulties due to the collapse of the real estate market and increased competition in its industry. It was eventually acquired by Sam Zell’s Equity Group Investments in 1987 and renamed Equity Properties and Development Corporation. The new company continued to operate as a REIT, focusing on the multifamily residential market. Today, ICA is no longer in operation, but its legacy lives on as an early example of the REIT model and its role in shaping the real estate industry.
