About Granite Broadcasting
Granite Broadcasting was an American television broadcasting company that operated from 1988 to 2017. Founded by W. Don Cornwell and Stuart Beck, the company owned and operated television stations in small to mid-sized markets across the United States. At its peak, Granite Broadcasting managed a portfolio of 23 television stations. The company was notable for being one of the largest African American-owned broadcasting companies in the United States during its operational years. Granite Broadcasting focused primarily on network-affiliated stations, maintaining relationships with major networks including NBC, CBS, ABC, and The WB/CW. In 2006, Granite Broadcasting filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection due to significant debt and changing market conditions. The company emerged from bankruptcy in 2007 under new ownership, with Silver Point Capital becoming the majority stakeholder. Throughout its history, Granite Broadcasting operated stations in markets such as Buffalo, New York; Fort Wayne, Indiana; and Duluth, Minnesota. The company ceased operations in 2017 when its remaining stations were acquired by Allen Media Broadcasting, a subsidiary of Entertainment Studios. During its nearly three decades of operation, Granite Broadcasting played a significant role in local television broadcasting and helped shape the landscape of mid-market television stations in the United States.
