Golfsmith International was an American specialty retailer of golf equipment and apparel, founded in 1967 in Austin, Texas. The company began as a small golf club repair and component business operated by Carl Paul and his wife Barbara from their home. Over the decades, it grew to become one of the largest golf specialty retailers in the United States. The company expanded through both organic growth and acquisitions, notably merging with Golf Town in 2012 to form Golfsmith International Holdings Inc. At its peak, Golfsmith operated over 150 stores across the United States, offering a comprehensive selection of golf clubs, accessories, apparel, and training aids. The retailer was known for its in-store services, including club fitting, repair services, and indoor practice facilities. However, facing increasing competition from online retailers and changing consumer habits, Golfsmith International filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in September 2016. Dick's Sporting Goods subsequently acquired Golfsmith's intellectual property and inventory from 30 stores, while the Canadian Golf Town operations were sold separately to a group of investors led by Fairfax Financial Holdings and CI Investments. The remaining Golfsmith stores were liquidated and closed by the end of 2016, marking the end of the brand's nearly 50-year history in the golf retail industry.
