Founded in 2002, the company is focused on developing and operating natural gas liquefaction and LNG export facilities in the United States. Freeport LNG Development's original facility, located in Quintana Island, Texas, began operations in 2008 as a regasification terminal. However, in 2011, the company announced plans to expand the plant to include a liquefaction facility which would allow it to export LNG to customers around the world. In 2019, Freeport LNG Development's second liquefaction unit began operations, increasing the terminal's overall production capacity to 15 million tons per year. The company has additional plans to construct a third liquefaction unit, which will further increase production capacity by an additional 4.4 million tons per year. Freeport LNG Development is majority-owned by a consortium of private-equity investors, although the company has attracted significant investment from companies in Asia, such as Japan's Osaka Gas and Sumitomo Corporation. Despite delays and setbacks due to regulatory hurdles and the COVID-19 pandemic, Freeport LNG Development remains committed to the continued growth and expansion of its LNG operations in the United States.
