Florida Rock Industries was a major American producer and distributor of construction materials, primarily focused on aggregates, ready-mixed concrete, and cement. Founded in 1929 by Thompson S. Baker in Jacksonville, Florida, the company grew to become one of the largest construction materials companies in the southeastern United States. The company operated numerous quarries, cement plants, and concrete facilities across Florida, Georgia, Virginia, and other southeastern states. Florida Rock Industries was particularly known for its high-quality limestone aggregates and specialized concrete products. The company played a significant role in supporting the region’s infrastructure development and construction boom throughout the latter half of the 20th century. In 2007, Florida Rock Industries was acquired by Vulcan Materials Company in a transaction valued at approximately $4.6 billion. At the time of acquisition, Florida Rock operated 41 ready-mixed concrete facilities, 26 concrete block plants, and several cement and aggregate facilities. The merger with Vulcan Materials created one of the nation’s largest producers of construction aggregates. Throughout its independent existence, Florida Rock Industries was listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol FRK and was known for its consistent financial performance and strong market presence in the construction materials sector.
