About Defense Security Service

The Defense Security Service (DSS) is an agency under the Department of Defense responsible for providing security support and education to the defense industry. Established in 1972, DSS is charged with ensuring that defense contractors and suppliers maintain adequate security practices to protect classified information relevant to national security. DSS conducts background investigations and security clearance adjudications for personnel working for defense contractors and suppliers. The agency also stands in support of the National Industrial Security Program, which is a federal mandate requiring the government to establish uniform standards for safeguarding classified data at contractors’ non-government facilities. DSS partners with other government agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in various operational activities. In addition to its security operations, DSS oversees the development of counterintelligence programs and provides security education to the defense industry through seminars and online courses. The Defense Security Service changed its name to Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency in 2019 following an executive order by President Donald Trump to merge several security agencies under the Department of Defense.
