The Corporation for the Promotion of Rifle Practice and Firearms Safety (CPRPFS), commonly known as the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), is a U.S. government-chartered program that promotes firearms safety training and rifle practice. Established by the U.S. Congress in 1996 as a 501(c)(3) organization, it inherited the responsibilities of the former Office of the Director of Civilian Marksmanship (DCM), which operated under the Department of the Army from 1903 to 1996. The organization conducts various marksmanship training programs, competitions, and educational initiatives across the United States. It operates through two primary locations: Camp Perry, Ohio, and Talladega, Alabama. The CMP is authorized by federal law to sell surplus military firearms, ammunition, and other related items to qualified U.S. citizens for marksmanship activities. The CMP administers several notable competitive shooting programs, including the National Trophy Rifle and Pistol Matches and the National Matches Junior Camp. They also manage youth programs such as the Three-Position Air Rifle National Championships and various training clinics. The organization works closely with shooting clubs, youth organizations, and educational institutions to promote safe firearm handling and competitive marksmanship skills.
