About Clay Electric CO
Clay Electric Cooperative, Inc. is a member-owned, not-for-profit electric utility serving North Central Florida since 1937. Headquartered in Keystone Heights, Florida, Clay Electric is one of the largest electric cooperatives in the United States, serving more than 190,000 members across 14 counties. The cooperative was established during the Rural Electrification Administration (REA) era, when many rural areas lacked access to electricity. Clay Electric began operations by serving approximately 100 members in Clay County and has since expanded its service territory to include parts of Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Columbia, Gilchrist, Lake, Levy, Marion, Putnam, Suwannee, Union, and Volusia counties. Clay Electric operates six district offices throughout its service area and maintains over 13,000 miles of power lines. The cooperative follows the seven cooperative principles and is governed by a nine-member board of trustees elected by the membership. As a Touchstone Energy Cooperative member, Clay Electric emphasizes reliability, community involvement, and member service. The utility purchases most of its power through Seminole Electric Cooperative, its wholesale power provider, and has implemented various energy efficiency programs and renewable energy initiatives to serve its members' evolving needs.
