About Bakkt
Bakkt is a company that offers a digital asset platform for institutional clients and individuals to buy, sell, store, and spend cryptocurrencies. It was founded in 2018 by the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), parent company of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). Bakkt’s goal is to provide a trusted and secure infrastructure for digital assets, which would bring more institutional investors to the cryptocurrency market. The platform allows for the trading of physically-settled Bitcoin futures contract, which means the underlying asset actually changes hands upon settlement. Bakkt also offers custody and a Bitcoin wallet, allowing clients to safely store and manage their digital assets. In addition, Bakkt has partnered with major companies such as Starbucks and Microsoft to create a payment platform that allows in-store purchases with cryptocurrencies. Bakkt has gained regulatory approvals from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS). In 2019, Bakkt acquired Bridge2 Solutions, a platform for loyalty and rewards programs, to enhance its offerings. Bakkt aims to bridge the gap between traditional financial systems and emerging digital asset technologies.
