AMC (originally an abbreviation for American Motors Corporation) is a now-defunct American automobile manufacturing company established in 1954. The company was formed from the merger of Nash-Kelvinator and Hudson, two struggling American automakers. Despite its relatively short lifespan, AMC produced some notable vehicles, including the compact Rambler, the muscle car Javelin, and the classic Jeep. AMC also produced engines and transmissions for a variety of other companies. In 1970, AMC was struggling financially due to the poor performance of its larger vehicles. To stay afloat, the company was forced to sell off its profitable Jeep brand to Chrysler Corporation. By the mid-1970s, AMC was continuing to lose money, and in 1979 it was bought out by the French automaker Renault. The company was renamed AMC Renault, but this did little to improve its financial situation. By the mid-1980s, Renault was also struggling financially, and in 1987 it sold AMC to Chrysler Corporation. Chrysler continued to produce some AMC designs, including the Jeep and Eagle brands, but eventually phased out the AMC name altogether. Today, AMC’s legacy lives on in the hearts of classic car enthusiasts and fans of American automotive history.
