Alabama Aircraft Industries (AAI), formerly known as Pemco Aviation Group and Hayes International, was an aircraft maintenance and modification company based in Birmingham, Alabama. Founded in 1951, the company specialized in aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services, primarily focusing on military and commercial aircraft. The company was a major contractor for the United States Air Force, providing maintenance services for various military aircraft, including the KC-135 Stratotanker and C-130 Hercules. AAI operated from its main facility at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, which included multiple hangars and specialized maintenance shops. Throughout its history, AAI was known for its expertise in aircraft modification, structural repairs, and systems upgrades. The company also provided cargo conversion services for commercial aircraft, transforming passenger aircraft into freighters. At its peak, AAI employed over 1,000 workers and was one of the largest aerospace employers in Alabama. However, after losing a significant U.S. Air Force contract in 2007 and facing financial difficulties, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2011. Following unsuccessful attempts to restructure and secure new contracts, Alabama Aircraft Industries ceased operations in 2012, ending its six-decade presence in the aviation industry.
