Advanced Medical Optics (AMO) was an American medical device company that specialized in ophthalmic surgical equipment, eye care products, and laser vision correction technologies. Founded in 2002 as a spin-off from Allergan, the company was headquartered in Santa Ana, California. AMO developed and manufactured products for cataract surgery, laser vision correction (LASIK), and contact lens care. The company’s product portfolio included intraocular lenses, phacoemulsification systems, ophthalmic viscoelastic devices, and laser systems for refractive surgery. Notable products included the TECNIS® family of intraocular lenses and the STAR S4 IR® Excimer Laser System. In 2009, Abbott Laboratories acquired Advanced Medical Optics for approximately $2.8 billion, integrating it into their medical devices division. The acquisition expanded Abbott’s presence in the vision care market and complemented their existing medical device portfolio. Following the acquisition, AMO operated as Abbott Medical Optics until 2017, when Johnson & Johnson acquired the business for $4.325 billion. The division was subsequently renamed Johnson & Johnson Vision, continuing to develop and market ophthalmic technologies and products globally. During its independent operation, AMO made several strategic acquisitions, including VISX, Inc. in 2005 and IntraLase Corp. in 2007, which strengthened its position in the laser vision correction market.
