The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is an independent agency of the United States federal government that was established to protect consumers from potentially dangerous products. The agency was created in 1972 by the Consumer Product Safety Act and its mission involves three key mandates: to protect the public from unreasonable risks of injury or death associated with consumer products; to promote voluntary standards and recalls; and to conduct research on and evaluate potential safety hazards associated with consumer products. The CPSC has jurisdiction over a wide range of consumer products, including toys, appliances, electronics, furniture, and household chemicals, among others. It works with companies to recall products that are deemed unsafe and also has the authority to take legal action against those that fail to comply with safety standards. The CPSC also has a database called SaferProducts.gov, which allows consumers to submit reports of unsafe products and search for information on recalls. The commission is composed of five members who are appointed by the President of the United States and confirmed by the Senate. They serve staggered terms of seven years. The CPSC headquarters is located in Bethesda, Maryland, and it has offices around the country. Its work has contributed to significant reductions in injuries and deaths associated with consumer products over the years.
